There is a path behind our house which runs alongside a canal. I often take the path to campus and it’s always a nice interlude between home and office — trees, birds, animals, water. Each spring the gates to the canal are open and water begins to flow, and I have always wanted to be on hand when the water comes. Today was my lucky day. I started on the path and noticed some water in the canal. A little ways along, I found myself abreast the small front tide of water making its way down the canal. One more item crossed off my bucket list.

Those Logan canal trails are nice. Especially for us ditch (island) dwellers. My walk to work now is fairly scenic (overlooks the city and capitol building at points) but I have to cross busy roads.

I jog along the upper canal trail quite often, and have also wondered about the water. The last few days there has been a bit of water in the canal, but not enough to really flow (it is more the case that there has been pooling of water in some low spots, though this does not happen earlier in the spring). It made me think they slowly open up the gates. Apparently not.

No, I think “they” (the canal overlords) do open the gates partially, and scout for any potential problems, before opening the gates wide. The little wave I saw was very slight and slow moving (I could outwalk it). It’s a bit disappointing, because I had visions of a wall of water racing down the canal, with terrified animals trying to escape its onslaught, etc. This, no doubt, is why I am unworthy to be a canal overlord. But I did see a drowned squirrel floating along, so that’s cool.

Yep, same path, though the carcass was blocking one end of a bridge crossing the canal (and not the bridge in the picture).
