Finally saw the film last night; I read the book months ago. No one equals Cormac McCarthy in portraying a pitiless, random, violent universe, occupied by pitiless, random, violent human beings. The film is great, and captures the novel perfectly. In one respect it’s better: Chigurh’s speeches aren’t as long and preachy. The best line of the film comes near the end, when Chigurh commands his next victim to call a coin toss; her life depends on it. She says, “The coin doesn’t decide; you decide.” And he says: “The coin and I got here the same way.”

I expect the upcoming adaptation of THE ROAD to be even better because its director’s previous film, THE PROPOSITION (written by Nick Cave), is a brooding and grimly expansive anti-Western clearly inspired by BLOOD MERIDIAN:

Sarah read THE ROAD for her book club and it’s on my shelf. I should give McCarthy a read.

I loved No Country for Old Men, Tommy Lee Jones’ character in particular (though of course, Anton as well). After seeing the movie I picked up The Road, which I finished in one (long) night. I will be heading to the bookstore soon with the intent to pick up everything else McCarthy has done.

What I’m NOT excited about is Ridley Scott’s upcoming adaptation of Blood Meridian.
