   This picture reminds me of what Huenemann once told me he wanted religion to be — gutted of its metaphysical fancies but still alive enough to inform our moral lives.
   Trouble is, looking at that tree, is that it is hard to imagine it will continue to live. In being trimmed down it has been reduced to something that has no grandeur. It might survive for a time, but it not longer inspires. It is now broken, bent, and deformed. It is a hollow shell of something that once strove for the heavens.
